New Members Wanted!
The Annual General Meeting of the Avon Amateur Dancers’ Club heard their Secretary, Peter Jones, appeal to all present members to encourage their friends and acquaintances who were interested in ballroom and Latin dancing to consider joining (or rejoining) the Club as one of the surest ways of maintaining vitality in the dancing community around the city of Bristol and beyond. Many of the veteran members who had founded the Club in 1975 and supported it loyally for many years were no longer active in the dancing world and the torch must now pass to younger generations of dancers, including those keen on competition. They would receive a warm and sincere welcome at Avon Dancers and the membership fee for the year (a maximum of £16 only for full membership) remained modest and entitled the Member to many price reductions on tickets and other concessions.
There was a general appeal for people to advertise the wonderful quality of Somerset Hall as the traditional venue of the Club and to encourage an open-door policy for all who wished to practice and improve their dancing in a relaxed and positive atmosphere. Myrtle Way, a veteran member and long-time supporter of the Club, urged people to publicise the tea dances as well as the regular balls that were held and to invite their friends to join them for the wonderful demonstrations that were provided. The Club had survived longer than most because it maintained its standards in all respects, including that of welcoming newcomers. Even same-sex couples who wished to dance together would be greeted very warmly, as they had in the past.
Members noted that the venue still attracted top demonstration couples to our dances and the best judges to our competition, of which we remained proud. Any enquiries for membership can be directed to the Secretary, Chairman (Fred Butler), Vice Chairman (Jack Gibson), or any other member of the Committee or the Club. Join us!
